Disc desiccation is your spine's grey hair
Desiccation means the disc has lost some of its water content. On MRI it looks darker, which is how the radiologist spots it.
Why discs dry out
A young disc is mostly water. Over the years, water content drops and the disc becomes slightly stiffer and flatter. It happens to everyone, and it starts earlier than most people expect.
Why it appears on the report
MRI shows water brightly. A drier disc appears darker, so the radiologist notes it. It is a description of appearance — not a statement that something went wrong.
What it means for you
On its own, very little. It becomes relevant only when combined with other findings and, above all, with what you actually feel.
The part that usually gets left out
In people with no back pain at all, disc bulges show up on 30% of 20-year-olds and 84% of 80-year-olds. Disc degeneration shows up on 37% of 20-year-olds and 96% of 80-year-olds. These findings are part of normal ageing for most people — like grey hair on a scan.

What it does not mean
- It does not mean the disc is dead or beyond help.
- It does not mean you can rehydrate it by drinking more water.
- It does not predict pain.
When to stop reading and see someone
Seek urgent medical care
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin and inner thighs (possible cauda equina syndrome)
See a professional before continuing
Most back pain is not dangerous. These signs, though, need a person — not a web page:
- Pain after significant trauma — a fall or an accident
- Neurological deficit: loss of strength, loss of sensation, or spreading numbness
- Fever, chills, or signs of infection alongside back pain
- Unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
- Severe night pain that does not settle with rest
- Pregnancy — back pain in pregnancy needs specialised guidance
- Under 18 years old — this content is written for adults

Every report is worded differently — the level, the wording, whether a nerve is involved. SpinalAI reads your own report and tells you what yours says, in plain English, in seconds.
